The Cincinnati area features several excellent photography education facilities. The first is the highly-rated school of Design, Art, Architecture and Planning at the University of Cincinnati. Union Institute and University's art major allows students to create their own focus, which can include photography in general or can be more specific (e.g., black and white photography), whereas the photography program at Northern Kentucky University, less than 10 miles outside of Cincinnati, requires all students to begin with black and white photography before moving into color imagery.
Photography employment in the state of Ohio is anticipating 11.6% growth between the years 2002 and 2012. Due to the appealing nature of the work, competition for these positions is expected to be intense. Both Cincinnati and nearby Dayton have been recently mentioned by Forbes magazine as good cities to build a career as a freelancer or telecommuter due to their low cost of living, booming economies, and accommodation to creative endeavors.
